It wasn’t so long ago that you would avoid turning down this laneway just off Stanley Street. Now it’s home to three small bars, the latest addition being Fifty-Fifty. From its Art Décor inspired exterior, you’d be excused for thinking it’s going to be another speakeasy, but it’s not. Inside the atmosphere is that of a modern small bar – large wall murals, simple wooden furniture, lighting from soft Edison globes and cocktails designed to enhance the flavours of spirits rather than disguise them.
A good way to start a visit is with a bloody Mary – the punchy chilli gives it a kick straight out of the area’s history. Or you can so softer with a salter Pina Colada which tastes like it could be a gelato flavour from nearby Messina’s. If you’d like something a bit stronger, try one of the various aged spirits on hand. To cool things down, the bottled craft beers are worth a look. Keep an eye out for occasional cocktails specials too.
In brief: Fifty-Fifty Best things: Experimental cocktail list that dresses up some old favourites. Ideal for: Small groups, catch-ups with friends, dates Date tip: The furnishings are not the best for a date – tables and chairs mainly. Try the lower seating for two in the corner next to the lamp. Gripes:Randomly closed for functions without giving anyone notice. This is one place where Facebook and Twitter could come in handy. It’s not so hard to post a message saying ‘We’re closed tonight for a private function’. Rating: 6/10
