Absinthe Salon, Surry Hills

There is one thing certain about Absinthe Salon, you won't forget it. But you probably won't remember a whole lot about it either. This art-deco shrine is dedicated to chasing the green fairy, aka drinking absinthe. Here you can go through the whole ritual of how it should be drunk: water dripped slowly over a sugar cube. Despite its inner-city location, you really do feel like you've stepped into some old world salon - later on you will probably float back out into Surry Hills with a big smile and slight speech impediment.

The experience is not cheap (averaging $15 and up for a shot), but the point is you are not here just to swill a beer and watch big screen TVs. Think of each shot of absinthe like a cocktail - something to savour and discuss. Since some options can pass the 70% alcohol barrier too, it will contain about the same alcohol as a normal cocktail. Most people start out gingerly at first but you'll notice that they start to get a little more boisterous after the first round or so (there is a 4 drink limit). It's not the place you'll go to every week but it is certainly a different experience and ideal warm-up for a fun evening.

In brief: Absinthe Salon
Best things: Absinthe drunk in the perfect surroundings
Don't miss: The experience to drink Absinthe old world style
Ideal for: Small groups, drinks with a difference, dates, a place to read a book early in the evening
Date tip: Book beforehand, take it slow and have dinner planned up the road in Surry Hills
Gripe: Can get a little noisy as the boisterousness tends to bounce off the hard surfaces in the small room
Rating: 9/10
