Established long before the Sydney's small bar changes kicked in, Different Drummer has enough going for it that you may come in for happy hour and stay until the 2am closing time. Decked out in fairly basic brick style, the dimm red lighting and groovy music create a great atmosphere. It can get slightly rowdy as the night's clientele ebb and flow, particularly if a student pub crawl drops in - but that's just part of the changing pace of the bar. For food, a tapas style menu is available, which is more modern Australian rather than Spanish. The dishes can vary in both value and consistency, but overall are definitely worth trying.
Best things: Relatively late closing time of 2am, cruisy lounge music and funk
Don't miss: 2-for-1 cocktail happy hours
Ideal for: Small groups, cocktails, catch-ups with friends, dates
Date tip: Down the back on the first floor or upstairs are your best bets (2-for-1 cocktail happy hours may help things along too)
Gripe: Food is generally excellent, but like the service, a little inconsistent at times
